It's always funny when they talk about "conservatives" in the media, since most of today's conservatives are very firmly planted on the left.
But it's still interesting to hear that "conservatism" is gaining a stronger foothold in Europe. I'm watching BBC on satellite (it's all I have here) and news about MP election results keeps pouring in. The "right" is winning in a landslide - and BBC is hating every minute of it.
Europeans Punish Left-Leaning Parties in EU Vote

Conservatives raced toward victory in some of Europe's largest economies Sunday as initial results and exit polls showed voters punishing left-leaning parties in European parliament elections in France, Germany and elsewhere.
"Tonight is a very difficult evening for Socialists in many nations in Europe," Martin Schulz, the leader of the Socialists in the European Parliament, told party faithful in Brussels via video link from Berlin. "(We will) continue to fight for social democracy in Europe."
Many Socialists ran campaigns that slammed center-right leaders for failing to rein in financial markets and spend enough to stimulate faltering economies.
Graham Watson, leader of the EU's center-right Liberal Democrat grouping, said early results suggested a rejection of the Socialist approach.
"People don't want a return to socialism and that's why the majority here will be a center-right majority," he said.Recently, of course, the MP expense scandal (http://forum-political.com/forum/showthread.php?t=913) has rocked the spend-happy left in the UK. But I bet the recession is the biggest factor in this movement - European voters must think conservative fiscal policy is the way to go.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the 2010 US Senate elections. I'm sure the Democratic US government hopes this nasty recession goes away before then. I bet they will spend whatever it takes, and hire as many as they have to!
