ABCNEWS: Bush Acknowledges Iraq 'Could Be' Like Vietnam...
Wed Oct 18 2006 18:45:10 ET
Below is a portion of the transcript from ABC News' George Stephanopoulos' Interview with President George W. Bush:
CLIP
STEPHANOPOULOS: It's been a brutal month in Iraq.
BUSH: That's right.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Yesterday, 11 Americans killed, another American killed today. On a day like that, what kind of reports do you get from the battlefield?
BUSH: Well, I get that report, that soldiers were killed...
STEPHANOPOULOS: Every casualty.
BUSH: Yeah, absolutely, I read every casualty, and it breaks my heart, because behind every casualty is somebody with tears in their eyes. Behind every casualty are families that will be mourning the loss of life for a lifetime. I think the hardest part of the presidency is to meet with families who've lost a loved one. //
STEPHANOPOULOS: Tom Friedman wrote in the New York Times this morning that what we might be seeing now is the Iraqi equivalent of the Tet offensive...
BUSH: Yeah.
STEPHANOPOULOS: ... in Vietnam in 1968. Tony Snow this morning said he may be right.
BUSH: Mm-hmm.
STEPHANOPOULOS: Do you agree?
BUSH: He could be right. There's certainly a stepped up level of violence, and we're heading into an election. //
STEPHANOPOULOS: But what's your gut tell you?
BUSH: George, my gut tells me that they have all along been trying to inflict enough damage that we'd leave. And the leaders of Al Qaida have made that very clear.

Developing...
"Like the Tet Offensive" does not translate into "like Vietnam" nor does it have the same meaning.
ABC News: "spoon feeding the masses with slightly poisoned doses."

Does it not?
I don't recall another different Tet offensive, Oh and I'm old enough to recall it BTW.
Oh, perhaps they were speaking French, "tete", french for "head", perhaps someones face, thus head, was found offensive.

There is a difference saying " Iraq in October 2006 is like the Tet offensive of 1968".
Or saying Iraq is like Vietnam.
Bush said October 2006 is like the Tet offensive of 1968... he did not say Iraq is like Vietnam.
There is a difference the size of a mountain.

One mans "mole hill" is another mans mountain and to the casual observer many mountains look alike.
Absolutely they are different conflicts though there are some obvious parallels.
We are fighting a non-conventional force of combatants that are unrecognizable from the surrounding citizenry in appearance and dress.
Our leadership has no understanding of the culture to it's detriment.
We have woefully misunderestimated the resolve of our foe.
These all lead to drawn out conflict with no apparent resolution.
If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck,........

Our "left" hand aids and motivates the enemy... all they need to do is bookmark a handful of american websites and they know the "left" is working as hard as "they are" (our ememies) to undermine our right hand.
Yes the left talks like a duck and walks like a duck.

Most serious case of "leftophobia" I've ever seen.
Bet you've given serious thought to having your left hand surgically removed.
And I'm sure you've never seen the film "My left foot".
Quite honestly if you believe verbatim most of the pap that either side profers then you're a fool.

There ya go man... be as simple as you can... first you swing one direction then you swing the other... you're a perfect fit for a nominee... (aka: politician)

What parallels can be derived between Iraq and Vietnam.
A cultural civil conflict "quack"
A non conventional ununiformed foe that in appearance is much like the civilian population, "quack"
An insurgency supported through covert means by neighboring countries, er, uh, "quack"
A lack on our part of the culture or language of the people, again "quack"
An unclear vision or plan to either calm or get out of the situation, well yes "QUACK, QUACK"
Hey I'll grant that it hasn't been 10+ years (yet), it's a different time and place (duh!), the level of death and devastation has not quite added up to that of Vietnam.
Failure though to see and learn from parallels is just plain ignorant.

This exists in every muslim country in the world and every muslim/christian country that share multiple religions within their boundries... so what?
A non conventional ununiformed foe that in appearance is much like the civilian population, "quack"
Yes, this is the way the Indians fought, the French, the English, the American's, etc. Nothing new here.
An insurgency supported through covert means by neighboring countries, er, uh, "quack"
Again what war can you name when outside support was not used as a tool for survival in continuing the war for as long as possible.
A lack on our part of the culture or language of the people, again "quack"
Not significant, as much of the world speaks a language other than english and has a culture much older than America's 230 years.
An unclear vision or plan to either calm or get out of the situation, well yes "QUACK, QUACK"
It's a war. It's not a powerpoint presentation.
Hey I'll grant that it hasn't been 10+ years (yet), it's a different time and place (duh!), the level of death and devastation has not quite added up to that of Vietnam.
Iraq does not compare to Vietnam in terms of casualities and deaths for our troops. Losing a 1000 lives a year in Iraq does not compare to any war we've ever been in...
Failure though to see and learn from parallels is just plain ignorant.
"Quack quack quack .........
Sorry but the quack doesn't amount to much.

In one way Iraq is nothing like Vietnam: Iraq is not over. Vietnam defined a generation in the United States. Perhaps that generation hopes Iraq will end like Vietnam, perhaps that is why some seek to draw a comparison prematurely. Not inferring that is the case with anyone here. Just that it is interesting how comparisons to Vietnam were put forth virtually immediately, almost as if a generation defined by Vietnam can only see another Vietnam.
