Don't you just love how the Media phrases their copy to scare the public even when there is no problem.
Case in point, yesterday's power outage in south Florida.
The headlines on the evening news blared "Problem at Nuclear (yes, nu-cle-ar for you Texans) Plant leaves thousand without power"
In actuallity the problem was caused by a malfunction in a Miami substation. The resultant spike was sensed by the safety devices at the Turkey Point generating station and they caused the generator to go off line.
In a nut shell the system sensed the problem and did exactly what it was designed to do. Shut down to protect the system. No problem, everything worked as designed.
What and where are substations?
They are all around us, near residential areas, shopping malls, along roadways. Fenced in areas that contain transformers and other electric gear that convert the high output of the generator to usable house current and distributes it to our homes and businesses.
They malfuction and breakdown. They were the cause of the power outage that took out most of the northeast a few years back.
They however are NOT nuclear power plants.
