Calling New Jersey's budget a "shambles," Gov. Chris Christie announced Thursday he is immediately freezing all state spending.
Saying New Jersey is on the verge of bankruptcy, Christie declared a fiscal emergency, announcing drastic cuts. Among them, aid to school districts that have excess surpluses.
"Today we are going to act swiftly to fix problems too long ignored. Today I begin to do what I promised the people of New Jersey I would do," Christie said.
The move had Democrats in an uproar, angry the governor used his executive powers instead of working with the Legislature.

Look at the results of Christie's responsible actions. The dems are in an uproar. What a surprise.
Unlike the federal government, states can't simply print money on a whim to subsidize everything, and pass the bill on to their kids.
I agree with Christie's actions.
Just exactly what we have to do! Stop spending when you are broke! I like it!

Democrats are selfish, plain and simple. When you are in the situation that we are in today you have two options: lie, cheat, and steal from your children so you don't have to reap what you deserve...or suck it up, tighten the belt, and get used to the idea of things being a little tighter for a while so that you don't sail your children down a river without a paddle. I agree with the governor.

What a sensible move.
I want to see how far he carries it. Obama, after all, declared he would do the same thing, but he didn't, and won't.
If Christie really does hold spending, and if he follows this by making some cuts where his executive powers allow him to, then I will be really impressed.

Christie better watch his back. The teachers unions are real factors there and they play for keeps in a state where Tony Soprano is more than a fictional character if youse bloodsuckers knows what I means.
Concrete slippers anyone!

Governor Christie has asked for miniscule compromises from the teacher's unions in New Jersey. Truly small time stuff - a very small contribution to the health care they receive (imagine that, contributing to your own health care), and a 1 year freeze in pay. But the teacher's unions are too spoiled and nasty to agree to this. Instead they joke about the Governor's death:

My sister-in-law is a retired school principal in NJ and the stories I have heard from her over the years shows that the power of the teachers unions in NJ knows no bounds. Death threats -- to be expected.
Speaking of which, I loved this brief interview with "Johnny Sack" of Sopranos fame on Fox Business News. This guy is good:

If they will not accept responsibility, then the Governor should encourage the cities & towns to not renew the contracts, fire the teachers, and bring in fresh willing staff. As has happened in a couple of towns in RI. :gun:

The cost per student in NJ is astronomical yet many of its large city school systems are in distress. When we lived in NJ 20 years ago the State had taken over Jersey City Schools and probably more since. One of the reasons we relocated to Ohio was to get my kids into more conservatively focused and lower crime schools. Teachers earn big bucks in NJ, too, but they need it to pay the high property taxes so they can be paid big bucks! No wonder there has been an exodus from NJ, NY, CA and other high tax states.

More praise for Governor Christie:
N.J. gov. sets tone for US

As the United States watches a debt crisis in Greece like a fiscal oil spill, waiting to see where it will spread first and when it will make landfall on our shores, Christie is tackling the nation’s worst state deficit — $10.7 billion of a $29.3 billion budget. In doing so, Christie has become the politician so many Americans crave, one willing to lose his job. Indeed, Christie is doing something unheard of: governing as a Republican in a blue state, just as he campaigned, making good on promises, acting like his last election is behind him.
We need more like this guy.

If he can clean up Jersey he may be at top of Republican slate for POTUS in 2012.
