It's incredible news.
The revolutionary, pro-western, anti-communist president of Poland, his wife, his top military and economic officials, and nearly his entire staff, have died in a plane crash in Russia.
Astounding! The government of Poland... nearly wiped out in a single plane crash.
Why were they all loaded onto one plane in the first place? That seems particularly strange to me. Even stranger that I haven't seen any journalism investigating the reason for this. Officially, they were en route to a WW2 memorial service honoring the dead of Katyn, a massive tragedy when thousands of imprisoned Polish officers and soldiers were brutally murdered by Soviet forces.
The media have quickly and collectively concluded the crash was pure accident. From their published reports it sure seems that way. All stories point to pilot error, weather problems, or an old plane. Media is really hammering the 'thick fog, pilot defiance' line. The accident verdict was published virtually immediately, based on witness reports of Russian officials. The "black box" has been found and confiscated by the Kremlin. Putin himself, in what is being reported as a gesture of devotion, has taken charge of the investigation into the catastrophe.
Just think about it all.
Let's try a simple exercise. For just a moment, disregard any media reports you have read about this event.
Now, consider the following.
The Polish president Kaczinski has influriated Putin and the Russians on several occasions over the last couple of years alone. Poland stood firmly with Georgia when Russia invaded that nation; yesterday Georgian president Saakashvili said something incredibly evil is going on here (http://newsmax.com/InsideCover/Mikhail-Saakashvili-polish-president/2010/04/10/id/355349). Kaczinski welcomed George Bush's desire to place long range missile defense systems on Polish soil - and Russia warned they would react accordingly (http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2008-08-20-poland-us-deal_N.htm). Also, don't forget Poland actually borders the Russian province of Kaliningrad.
Now back to the media reports about this crash. Notice they eagerly paint the background of improving Russian-Polish relations. But think about the facts above. Remember the stories you have read in recent years. In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
So what do you think now?
Here's the net result. Whether this really was an accident or not is actually irrelevant, because nobody east of Germany believes it was. (I'm posting from east of Germany right now.) Yesterday, I told as many people about this as I could. Nearly all of them said some version of, "It's no coincidence, in Russia they always kill people they don't like." That's an exact quote from one of my good friends here in Kiev. Here they're just not buying it. You can bet they're not buying it in Poland either.
