ok so i see this article today, and couldnt believe the title so of course i read the article. well in my opinion she didnt say it was bush's fault i believe she was saying that it was the republican party's fault.
either way she isnt presidential material in my opinion, at least right now. i might have to retract this in 2012 just depends on what my views are then.

It was the republican party's fault.
I am very conservative, but I could not push the button for McCain/Palin, because they do NOT represent what I believe. The Libertarian party is the closest thing to Reagan I can find.
I might have been more inclined to vote a Jindahl (Gov of LA) / Palin ticket as he was a successful businessman who brought good practices to the state gov't.

Well, she is technically correct that if the Bush Presidency hadn't been seen nearly universally as a failure, it would have been far more likely that the American people would have elected another Republican President.
What I believe she doesn't understand is that the prospect of a McCain-Palin administration was seen by a significant portion of the electorate as being, if anything, worse than the Bush years. The prospect of Palin being a "heartbeat away" from the Presidency horrified a lot of independent and women voters. But more importantly, McCain and his campaign never could communicate a clear vision of how they were going to be markedly different from the Bush administration. Promising "more of the same" in Iraq didn't thrill too many voters - and "Drill, Baby, Drill!" seemed less important once the financial markets started falling apart.
Success has many fathers but defeat is an orphan
Quote popularized by John F. Kennedy after the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. (Of course, Kennedy didn't cite the origin, which is attributed to Roman Senator and historian Tacitus: prospera omnes sibi indicant, aduersa uni imputantur. - The credit of success is claimed by all, while a disaster is attributed to one alone.)
See, you've learned some latin today. You've heard of Tacitus, and you are reminded of some of our own near-recent history.

Our republican version democracy is a system of checks and balances. Three distinct branches of government each with it's own limited amount of power. You can kind of equate it to the childs game "Rock, Paper Scissors".
What power does a president have who is not a member of the same party as the controlling majority of congress. Little except Veto. But the veto is a viable tool in the checks and balance system. It can be overridden by enough support in congress but it has to be overwhelming support. If there is that much overwhelming support to begin with there is not likely to be a veto no matter what the president believes, but there is the threat.
The Republicans screwed up by forgetting that McCain is a moderate as republicans go. It's why he was intitially popular. The party saddled him with a perceived conservative running mate and held his feet to the fire to court the conservative faithful against the mainstream of the populous.
Had he been allowed to run as the moderate that he is it may have ended differently.
Regardless, neither the party or Bush did McCain any favors.
