Huge Ice Island Calves Off Greenland Glacier

By Timothy Gardner
Sun Aug 8, 11:58 am ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) –QUOTE: “An ice island four times the size of Manhattan broke off from one of Greenland's two main glaciers, scientists said on Friday, in the biggest such event in the Arctic in nearly 50 years.” END OF QUOTE

The ice island is the size of 100 square miles and a thickness of half the height of the Empire State Building. A chunk had been expected to break off from the Petermann Glacier, as it had been growing for the last eight years, but the size was unexpected. The new ice island will enter the Nares Strait located 620 miles south of the North Pole between Greenland and Canada.

“The fresh water stored in this gigantic ice chunk could keep the Delaware or Hudson Rivers flowing for more than two years, and could keep all U.S. public tap water flowing for 120 days.” said Andrew Muenchow, Professor of Ocean Science and Engineering at the University of Delaware.

Muenchow said it was hard to say if this event happened because of global warming, but scientists say that the first six months of 2010 have been the hottest globally on record, plus the El Nino weather pattern changes and man-made greenhouse gases have made it hotter globally.

I'm confused, did this chunk break off because it grew too large?

Ain't no foolin with mother nature.

Future generations will have to cope.

Only the most out-there libs would blame earthguakes, volcanos, violent electric storms and the like on humans. Of course many of us are skeptical on any human impact on climate. I am more concerned about the quality of our children living in a state contolled nanny state.

Again, Remphoto, your inclination to twist words, spin, and give inaccurate replies in lieu of honest answers is totally funky.

Fires, earthquakes, violent storms, excessive heat, floods are merely the predecessors of global warming, caused by human pollution.

Children, many states away from coal-fired/oil-generated industrial plants, are suffering the effects of pollution caused by these industries. Children are suffering chronic illnesses caused from the polution of automobiles, trucks. on our highways, streets, toxins being dumped into our streams, rivers, and lakes by corporations. All caused by uncontrolled pollution during the Bush Regime (2001-2008) which made us #1 in pollution in the world. Thanks dubya

The hour is late for the ostriches out there whose ecological ignorance is hastening our planet's demise. Example: Every new WalMart opening is yet another 'hotspot' of parking concrete. We are ignorant of the fact that TREES should be our BFF, as they work 24/7 night and day to clean pollution from our dirty atmosphere, yet builders clear cut forests because it is cheaper and faster to pour concrete and build another Walmart 'hotspot.' Trees are the covering of our planet and can do much to preserve the health of our children, but allowing clear-cutting for financial purposes renders us a concrete nation, depleting our major source of renewing oxygen for our children to breathe.

Trees are important to our lives. Go hug one today...:coffee

Sorry, but to say that earthquakes are in anyway caused by humans is out there in Hollywood nut land. And as the top polluter, the US is not even close (check your facts). Any pollution which may be occuring began long before gwb and hasn't been improved by barry (except his policies which have killed business output in his recession).

I love trees and the great things which can be made from them!

Wrong again, binky....see:

1a) Human activity has caused at least 200 earthquakes, including the temblor that devastated the town of Newcastle, Australia, new research suggests...

1b) Earthquakes Caused By Human Activities Earthquakes, Faults, Produce, Along, Fractures, Wells, Water, and Human Activities.
Nuclear weapons testing in the desert near Los Alamos, New Mexico, was the first known human activity to produce measurable earthquakes that were found to propagate along existing faults. Our ability to build major dams that retain huge quantities of water has also generated earthquakes by so-called
"hydrofracturing," in which the weight of the water stresses fractures in the underlying rock. Pumping of oil and natural gas from deep wells and the disposal of liquid wastes through injection wells have also produced small motions along faults and fractures.

2a) World's Biggest Polluters:
China just overtook the US as the top polluter in the world. The World’s Biggest ...China has now overtaken the United States as the world’s biggest polluter; its carbon emissions have more than doubled in a decade. However, US and China, world’s biggest polluters, promise to address global climate ...
see: www.thenewecologist.com/2009/10/the-worlds-biggest-polluters ·

2b)
Motor vehicle emissions are one of the leading causes of air pollution. China, United States, Russia, Mexico, and Japan are the world leaders in air pollution emissions. Principal stationary pollution sources include chemical plants, coal-fired power plants, oil refineries, petrochemical plants, nuclear waste disposal activity, incinerators, large livestock farms (dairy cows, pigs, poultry, etc.), PVC factories, metals production factories, plastics factories, and other heavy industry. Agricultural air pollution comes from contemporary practices which include clear felling and burning of natural vegetation as well as spraying of pesticides and herbicides.

About 400 million metric tons of hazardous wastes are generated each year. The United States alone produces about 250 million metric tons Americans constitute less than 5% of the world's population, but produce roughly 25% of the world’s CO2 and generate approximately 30% of world’s waste.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollution#Official_acknowledgement

3) The accelerated problem of air pollution is determined not only by the increase of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere but the phenomenon is closely connected with deforestation as well. Trees absorb the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and in turn release oxygen but with the reduction of the wooded areas like forests, jungles and parks.

With the number of cars on the road polluting the air, is making it more than difficult to maintain a balance. The situation is becoming extremely serious and unless we all make efforts to diminish air pollution, chances of survival on the planet will become desperate.Power plants that generate the electricity which we rely on everywhere in our society cause about three and half thousand lung cancer cases and over thirty-five thousand heart attacks and this is just in the United States on a yearly basis.

The alarm bells are already ringing around the world with the rapid melting of the glaciers, due to the global warming, which threatens so many countries.

The gases trapped in the atmosphere prevent it from cooling, acting as a barrier for the surface of the planet; this affects climate, animal behaviour and the very evolution of species and mankind on the whole.

He is the epitome of a selfish American that refuses to look at the trash and pollution he is offering to our planet on a daily basis, secure in the knowledge that "someone else will fix it"...and it WILL be a Democrat because republicans don't have the morality, will, or manpower to fix breakfast much less anything else.

You know cajun, i get a kick out of watching a "caring" liberal arrogantly claim the moral high ground and lecture the rest of us on how we should live. Algore has made a career of that while he flies around in his citation. Ed begley jr might be a misled environmental wacko but at least he lives his beliefs. I profess no such nonsense but my main trip car is a 43 mpg mini cooper.

This morning at church I made a point of thanking the Creator for His provisions of resource for our sustenance.

1) As usual, bad boy, you are wrong and I'll let you provide your link as to what percentage of oxygen is produced by trees. No rag partisan links, please. btw: do people get 'extra points' for kissing-up in this forum?

2) Are you talking about Remphoto the jingoistic teabagger non-debater? My BMW was a gift from my former fiance' when my original car, a 1968 MGBGT, went bonkers on me. I cried giving that car up, and think about it often...it was like my best friend since my 16th birthday. We went everywhere together and I spent every moment I could just washing and waxing my little yellow sports car. It was like Dorothy and Toto in The Wizard of Oz, except that I had a car, not a dog....

3) With typical American ingenuity, battery packs will be in good supply both economically and general acceptability by the time I get one.

Are you like special as in especially dumb! The batteries contain very toxic chemical that are so dangerous to build that they contract with other countries like SK for the new Volt! They only last 5 to 7 years and they have no idea what they will do with the used ones as they can't put them in a landfill! American made my butt!
