I was a 45 L that worked on the 8" howitzer and 20 mm Vulcan. Never had to chance to work on a 109.

I have not, but many members of my family have or are serving in the military.
Some have died as a result of that service!

I was a Navy brat living in Gitmo Cuba (on base) 1968 & 1969.

Now, I'm a civil servant, certainly not like waking up each day with the potential to get your ass shot off!

My greatest respect to those that do it daily

Then again.....I work for the IRS......where we have been domestically attacked with guns, bombs & poisons. Face personal physical attacks, frequent verbal attacks all while traveling the countryside knocking on Doors for Dollars (Un-Armed). That too take BALLS!

All to execute the demands of our weak knee Congress, none of which would dare ride shot-gun with me when I go out and do their truly dirty work.

Thanks Rem,

I'm sure we all do.

I'll lay low reading posts, I figure this place could become a good sister site to get into greater detail & political passions related to the topics discussed across the street.

So do I. Might change when riding season resumes around here -- then I'll be on no forums. Will be out scaring the "Citizens" (and myself).

Army National Guard 2002-Present. About three years of active duty through deployments/training in there. 13F and by the time this contract is up I might as well reup for 8 more and get some retirement.

No, but only because I haven't seen my Class A's since AIT. I suppose I'll have to find the ol' cross cannons eventually, but I've found a great method to avoid formal situations. Every time they've tried to send me to a leadership school I've been deployed or in college. Here's another trick: to get out of the two week summer training, just volunteer for a deployment, seven years now and I've only suffered through two summer camps. I hate summer camp.

I was in the same position you're in - I was an engineering officer for one of the Bns in the Infantry Brigade.

Not a S-level staff position, just what they call "special staff". I was the Task Force Engineer and always the junior officer in the TOC. Needless to say I got treated like $h!t since I wasn't wearing cross rifles AND the junior officer. Guess who got to make the coffee? ;)

My last deployment was with an Engineering Company and they stuck me with a group of 11Bravos. I don't need to tell you who drew the most sandbag details.

With any luck I'll be able to avoid the dress uniform for a while. While it makes no career sense, my plan is to do the next two or three years enlisted and then go to OCS to break up the monotony of a 20 year commitment. Sort of split the whole thing down the middle.

Think real hard about the OCS route. I was ten years enlisted and a NCO when I went to OCS. Not trying to discourage you, but it makes a huge difference. For me, it took a lot of the fun out of it. May turn out to be different for you, but if I had it to do all over again, I'd probably think twice.

After 15 years I finally got out due to the politics of being an officer - three months shy of making CPT.

Thanks for the advice and I've known others that agree with you. I've been an NCO for three years now and only started to entertain the OCS route because of some hair brain, could have gotten us needlessly killed missions I got sent on...Granted if someone would have gotten hit on the few ridiculous missions I'm thinking about heads would have rolled up top, but then again my head might have literally been rolling for that justice to actually happen.

I can't stand the politics of it and that's pretty much why I've put off moving away from the enlisted ranks as long as possible. The problem is that if you get very high in the enlisted ranks in the guard you seem to have to deal with the politics anyway so why not take the pay. It also doesn't help that the quality of the retirement points for a 2LT are higher than those for a CSM.

LOL - more people go to OCS because of idiot officers than any other reason dude. That was EXACTLY the reason I went too...

Agreed. The pay is a bit better, but a CSM will kick a 2LTs ass any day (prior enlisted or not) ;)

Yours is a noble reason for wanting to do it. If that reason alone is enough to motivate you to do it then perhaps it's the right thing. Just don't do it for the money, because take it from me - the money's not worth it. Most (company grade at least) officers would agree.

If you took the extra (unpaid) hours you put in as a commissioned officer and divided by the amount of extra pay you get you'd be surprised at how little you really make.

Jes sayin'...

You're absolutely right. Anyone who's been in will tell you it's not about the money for the simpl fact that $/hour is rather pathetic. I can think of many times where our LTs had it easy, but I can think of many more where we were dicking off or sleeping when they had to go to meetings, duties, etc.

Yep, I recall many times sitting under a tree with a flashlight between my teeth writing an op order, then waking up my SLs to give it to them, letting them go back to sleep, then getting all my gear ready for the mission, just to realize now it's time to check on why the MREs weren't delivered at the drop site, etc.....

I did discover, that if you don't have sex, or masturbate over a 2-3 month period, you will suffer from blue balls, and end up having a wet dream anyway.
