Now be nice

I am -- won't tell you how I really feel.:) I presume you tossed this one out there as a conversation starter, realizing that many of us here have deep reservations about unions and would take the bait. Which I did.

Now I have to go back to watching the O'Reilly factor and get updated on how Franken is stealing the election, Harry Reid is mishandling the Illinois Senate appointment and Madeoff was kept out of jail by a pinhead judge.:D

WELL G, i would sign A Petition to give Employees Free Choice,to give more workers a chance to form unions and get better health care, job security, and benefits – and an opportunity to pursue their dreams. i am in a local union local 8-1003 of the USW I am the local financial officer

BUT! I DONT AGREE WITH WHO THE USW BACKED AND I DID NOT.
THE UNION DOES HAVE ITS DOWN SIDE

most of what i see you post i dont agree with but i will here.

joining a union will not take you from an 8.00 job to a 20.00 job just by joining
a union. it just dont work that way.

In common with a lot of people, I have somewhat mixed feelings regarding unions. Especially in very large companies, the individual lower level employee really has little voice in how he or she is treated. And let's be honest - there are more than a few "little Hitlers" managing departments in just about every organization out there. A good Union helps protect workers from abusive or unfair employers.

With that said, I am concerned about the way some Unions operate. Sometimes I believe they are overly protective of workers who genuinely are harmful to the organization. And in the 21st Century, companies need to be extremely adaptable in order to meet the competition and the customers' expectations. Sometimes Unions can make it too difficult for companies to change quickly.

Personally I believe that a great deal of the current economic crisis is due to the decline in real wages for average Americans. ALL of the economic growth in the past decade has gone to the wealthiest Americans - while average families saw their inflation-adjusted incomes drop from about $51,000 to less than $50,000. With no real increase in earnings, the only way Americans could keep buying was through an increase in the value of their homes. This worked as long as prices kept increasing - but once they stopped, then the bubble burst in a hurry.

Part of the reason for the growth in income disparity is due to globalization. Lower-skilled jobs can be done cheaper overseas. But I also believe that the decline of Unions over the past twenty years has made it much easier for companies to pay the executive suite a whole bunch more, while leaving the ordinary worker at a comparatively low wage rate.
