It's part of the culture. I work in a company, where at 41, I am the "old guy". BO aligns himself with the younger generation and they are always looking to celebrate every tiny achievement. What I call doing your job, they need to have a celebration luch, happy hour and certificates of completion printed up.

This is progress my friend, a culture of mediocrity.
If you can't make your house payment, no worries the Government will bail you out.
If you can't get a job, no problem, the Government will "create" one for you.
If you don't want to pay your taxes, no sweat, maybe you'll be treasury secretary one day.
If you don't like war, hey it's OK we'll just apologize to everyone that we've been such meany pants lately and everything will be OK.
If you don't like the high price of oil, terrific! We'll power our society by "harnessing the power of the wind, and the sun, and the moon, blah, blah..."

I hear you. Some (but not all) of this generation are what are called "trophy kids". At any type of competition everyone gets a trophy, ribbon or other form of recognition. Everyone is a winner, 2+2 can equal 5 if you wish it to, etc. They also have "Helicopter Parents" who hover above them waiting to snatch them up and protect them when the going gets tough. We did not rear our children this way and some people thought we were too tough. Our kids are now productive adults, so guess we did something right.
At our comany we even have a "Hoopla Team" whose job in addition to creating buzz with our customers is to keep our employees whipped up. They do games (right now we are exchanging Valentines with our customers and each other, believe it or not.) And it works; when Hoopla backs down, the employees become demotivated and complacent.

Ya, I think it started when they started making them wear helmets and pads to ride tricycles. Then they did away with dodge ball and tetherball.
How are kids supposed to get tough for crying out loud?
When I was growing up if you hadn't had stiches and at least one broken limb by the time you got through 3rd grade you were a pansy...

I put that in there for you, MyCar.:D Actually, there are many exceptions to this stereotype. Seems to depend almost entirely on how the child was reared. I do believe video games and technology have had some negative affects on some but have provided benefits in learning for others. As my doctor says, "Everything in Moderation, Including Moderation.":D

VIDEO GAMES HAVEN'T RUINED AS MANY PEOPLE AS THEY THOUGHT THEY WERE GOING TO. TRUE IT CHANGES PEOPLE'S INTERESTS NOW INSTEAD OF PEOPLE WANTING TO BE MECHANICS AND COPS, THEY WONT TO BE VIDEO GAME DESIGNER'S OR IT GUYS. HELL MY FRIEND WAS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF WASTED LIFE DUE TO VIDEO GAMES HE WOULDN'T GO TO SCHOOL FOR WEEKS AT A TIME HE WOUOLD JUST SIT AT HOME AND PLAY GAMES. NOW HE IS AN IT GUY FOR THE MILITARY HE IS CURRENTLY SERVING WITH AN MP UNIT IN BAGHDAD. HAS PLANS TO COME OUT AND OPEN A PAINTBALL FIELD. SEEMS THAT HIS USELESS HOBBY HELPED PUSH HIM INTO SOMETHING THAT HAS HELPED HIM SAVE OVER 50K FOR HIS NEW BUSINESS.
AS FAR AS MY GENERATION BEING CRAP..... I AGREE I ONLY KNOW OF 2-3 PEOPLE I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH THAT ARE DOING ANYTHING WITH THEM SELFS MOST ARE EITHER HIGH ALL THE TIME OR WORKING AT MCDONALDS NOW 5 YEARS LATER. BUT I GUESS WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT MY GRADUATING CLASS WAS 500, YOU KNOW HOW MANY GOT DIPLOMA'S? 136. THAT IS PATHETIC WAS IT THE SCHOOL'S FAULT PARTLY THEY HAD A BUNCH OF CRAP TEACHERS, BUT ON THE SAME HAND WHEN I WOULD GET A CRAP TEACHER I WOULD GO TO A GOOD ONE AND GET THEM TO HELP ME STUDY WHAT I NEEDED TO KNOW ON MY TIME NOT JUST SIT AND WATCH MOVIE'S ALL DAY. I DIDN'T GRADUATE WITH A GREAT GPA MOSTLY BECAUSE MY FRESHMAN YEAR I WAS STILL STUCK IN THE EITHER YOU PASS OR FAIL COULDN'T UNDERSTAND THAT WHAT I DID THEN WOULD MEAN ANYTHING MY FRESHMAN GPA WAS LIKE A 1.2 MY TOTAL GPA WAS A 3.3. I GUESS I WENT OFF TRACK A GOOD BIT THERE BUT JUST TRYING TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND A LITTLE MORE ABOUT MY GENERATION

I lived in a boys home when I was young, I really don't want to talk about how I was "reared"...

Didn't mean to offend, just been my general observation, though certainly there are numerous examples of seemingly well-reared kids gone bad and people from difficult circumstances that have done well. Heck, our current President was able to rise above his childhood circumstances (though I suspect he had some special help along the way.) I was blessed to have great parents, but believe me, I learned lots of things from them that we did not use with our kids. And our kids probably will not completely follow our example, either.

No offense taken, I was just playing off the "reared" thing, you know, like in prison... Just a bad, stupid joke.
I don't know where my head's been lately... :(

Dude, if nothing else you give this forum flavor. Sometimes it's the flavor I had in my mouth after waking up from a three day bender, but it's flavor nonetheless...
See what happens when Engels and G isn't around? We resort to picking on each other...

Totally missed your humor Johnny. I usually use the word "raised" but realizing that was grammatically incorrect, thought I'd better use "reared' lest I be berated by Engels.:D
