View Full Version : I'm listening to the Grateful Dead in My Office -- am I going to Conservative Hell?

Have the Dead playing from my ipod and mellowing out after a full week of capitalistic banking money changing. Been taking money from savings depositors almost for free and lending it out at confiscatory rates to people who probably won't want to repay it now that Papa Barry is now taking care of them cradle to grave. (Actually we aren't lending money -- just listen to MSNBC. We are hording the money to throw a big party for our management team at the local Big Boy's Country Club -- but I digress).
Back on point, for some unexplainable reason today I am drawn to liberal music like the Dead, Springsteen, Crosby, Stills & Nash, etc. Just like back in college, except I am straight today while listening to the Dead. Unfortunately, the only "dealers" I know here in Mayberry sell cars and not weed. Could this be a sign that I am getting in touch with the new reality of an Obama America? Do I just need to stay mellow and not worry about anything just like during college? Papa Barry going to feed my head? Or should I load up a little Patriotic Charlie Daniels and get back into the fight? Your opinions are requested.

:rofl:rofl I struggle with that daily...
My wife and I have come to the conclusion that if we limit our entertainment only to entertainers whose ideology we agree with it will get boring really quick.
I love classic rock, although I find that without the added dimension of being in a "Purple Haze" or getting that "Peaceful Easy Feeling" a lot of the lyrics just don't make sense anyway (if you disagree then please help me to understand what the hell Mannfred Mann is talking about in "Blinded by the Light"). I figger I just turn up the volume and enjoy the tune.
So... my suggestion - get "Comfortably Numb" and let the Obamassiah take care of you dude.

Far out, Man, everyone knows that Blinded is about some dude that smokes too much weed and then tells his life story. You need to be loaded to understand,Man, if you know what I mean.:D Being unable to score a doobie I went to that great fount of information, Wiki, and here's what I found:
"Springsteen wrote "Blinded by the Light" after most of the others on Greetings were finished and is also one of the few songs for which Springsteen wrote the words before arranging the music. The song itself contains many lyrical (and therefore obscure) references such as "Madman drummers bummers" - Vinnie "Mad dog" Lopez, the first drummer in the E Street Band. "Indians in the summer" - Bruce's little league baseball team as a kid. "In the dumps with the mumps" - being sick with the mumps. "Boulder on my shoulder" - a "chip" on his shoulder. "Some all hot, half-shot, heading for a hot spot, snapping fingers clapping his hands" - Being a "know it all kid growing up, who doesn't really know anything." "Silicone Sister" - a dancer at one of the local strip joints in Asbury Park."
I've liked the Boss's music since my days living in Jersey. In mid-80's saw him driving a blue '69 Chevelle SS 396 on the Garden State Parkway and nearly wet myself. Dislike the Bruce's politics, but somehow I relate to him, and that scares me.

If you want to be forgiven I think the new procedure is you have to write your congressional representative, who then asks President Obama, and a few months later you will get a thumbs up or thumbs down.

Actually I think they have expedited the process by converting all the portapotties on the Washington Mall into confessionals. The typical pennance for infractions is 10 "Hail Pelosi"s and 5 "Our Obama"s...

:) Thanks for the info. I never lived in Jersey per se, but I spent an awful lot of time up there in '06 & '07. I used to fly into Newark every week. Spent time in the New Brunswick area, Newton, and Bayonne (Sopranos country for sure).
Sat bumper to bumper on the Parkway, I95 and the Staten Island Expwy many times. Believe it or not, for a midwest boy, I actually like that part of the country...
Loved the opportunity to be able to just jump on the NJT and cruise into Manhattan to spend the day whenever I had time.

I grew up (was "reared":)) in Kentucky, went to college in PA then worked in NJ for 8 years. Of those 3 places, I liked NJ the best. Lots to do and see. Much history, too. This was my first exposure to real liberals (as opposed to southern democrats). It was fun debating them, just as it is (was) on here. Still have relatives in Jersey and visit as often as we can. Really like watching the Sopranos, too, though I can understand why some NJ Italians take it as a slur.

Cajun, you are a wise man. After writing my confessional, I switched the iPod over to my favorite Country songs. Listened to Montgomery Gentry, Charlie Daniels, Josh Turner, Toby, Alan Jackson, Hank, Hank Jr., Dwight Yoakum plus some country rock like the Allman Bros, Lynrd Skynrd, etc. Got me back into the proper frame of mind. Nothing like some cheating and drinking songs to bring me back to reality.:D BO could learn something about what Heartland Americans think from some of these songs.

Sorry guys, you've lost me on this one. Even though technically I'm from Tulsa, I haven't really spent a lot of time here, so Garth Brooks and Reba is about as country as I can get, maybe a little Johnny Cash one in a while, but only in small doses. Not a huge country fan. I can definitely do Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, Charlie Daniels & Allman Bros tho....

I grew up around traditional country music in KY and hated it other than novelty songs that were appropriate to my lifestyle at the time, "Lord knows I'm drinking" and "Pop a Top". Liked "progressive rock" and country rock of late '60s and early '70's. A few years ago we started watching CMT and I liked the attitude and heart of the performers. Patriotic and anti-liberal, too, for the most part. Found the music was more rock oriented with great guitar riffs. Really got into it and mostly what I listen to on the iPod. Check out the Cross Roads series with people like Montgomery Gentry playing with Lynrd Skynrd or Pat Benatar with Martina McBride or Alan Jackson with Jimmie Buffet. Great stuff and very compatible.

What I really like about country music is the stories. A lot of new music is so artificial, only real people talk about their old lady who took the dog, the baseball card collection and ran off with the neighbor.

Speaking of man crushes, just bought little boxes of "I love you" valentine candy for each of the employees in our main office. We all have valentine boxes on our desks (mine is a decorated Harley gift bag) and we are inviting customers and other employees to send valentines -- sort of a morale and customer buzz strategy. I'm going to give each employee, boys and girls, a box, but am a little concerned about sexual harassment and manhood implications. Well, heck with political correctness, here I go.....

But don't get down in the dumps, there are many other fish in the sea!

No worries mate! I quit worrying about my manhood shortly after puberty. As long as I'm "gettin' it" regular people can think what they want about me...'' :rofl:rofl
