It would seem BO now has a God complex. He thinks if he speaks things into existance, it will just happen. Case in point...

Obama Orders Appliance Standards to Get Tougher
Feb 6, 2009

President Barack Obama, speaking at the Department of Energy on Thursday, announced new energy efficiency standards for home appliances. He also issued a sharp rebuke to critics of the proposed stimulus plan who put the "pork" label on energy efficiency investments that are part of the plan.

"This plan will finally spark the creation of a clean energy industry that will create hundreds of thousands of jobs over the next few years, manufacturing wind turbines and solar cells for example, and millions more after that," President Obama said. "These jobs and these investments will double our capacity to generate renewable energy over the next few years."

As part of that effort, he said, "Today I've signed a presidential memorandum requesting that the Department of Energy set new efficiency standards for common household appliances. This will save consumers money. This will spur innovation. And this will conserve tremendous amounts of energy. We’ll save through these simple steps over the next thirty years the amount of energy produced over a two-year period by all the coal-fired power plants in America."

The Associated Press, citing anonymous sources in the Obama administration, say the president wants new rules, some by August of this year, that will enforce the energy efficiency standards deadlines that are already in place. Many DOE deadlines for new appliance standards have been missed in recent years. AP reports that the president will give high priority to standards that will provide the most economic benefit to consumers.

I really want to know what planet this guy's head is on. research costs money. That is passed on to the consumer. It will not save consumers money until the technology has grown "cold".

Just because you order a company to create more efficient products, doesn't means that will happen. R&D hasn't been sitting around in companies waiting for the prez to order them to work harder. These guys have been doing what they can to stay competetive.

What will happen will mirror the auto industry. They will make products that are what people want and will buy. They will also make the "prez approved" products which no one wants and they will sit in storehouses for years.

As a 20+ year experienced manufacturing engineer... in this area, I know a million times more than BO.

The appliance industry has been making more and more efficient appliances over the past 15yrs. or so. The biggest problem they have now, is quality it's gone down hill has been for yrs. I've seen it first hand had my own appliance repair business for 35yrs. until 2006. This guy is going for sound bites and nothing else.

I agree totally, this is silly. He appears to want to drive energy efficiency by taking greater control of private business. But what he will create is over-regulation and business strangulation at the very time we don't need it. Not to mention that he is barking up the wrong tree here; like scol says, efficiency is not a problem with appliances, they are already very efficient.

This is the whole problem with the stimulus bill. Too much spending and not enough stimulus.

They don't want to try to pass this shite on its own so they tag it into this bill and will blame Repubs for its failure due to their delaying. No win situation when the Dum's own 90% of the media.
