Why the GOP Should Shut Up Six out of the top 10 Senate earmark hogs are Republicans.
By Timothy Noah Posted Thursday, March 12, 2009, at 5:49 PM ET

Mitch McConnell. Click image to expand.Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., wants you to know that he voted against the $410 billion spending bill President Obama signed into law on March 11. His fellow Republicans "tried to cut the bill's cost. Our ideas would have saved billions of taxpayer dollars. Unfortunately, every one was turned aside." Well, not every one. According to this spreadsheet prepared by Taxpayers for Common Sense, the spending bill incorporates 53 ideas put forth by McConnell himself in the form of legislative earmarks. Far from lowering the spending bill's cost, they increased it by $76 million.

Compared with his fellow Republicans, McConnell is a relative piker. Here is a list of the Senate's 10 biggest earmark hogs, based on dollar amounts in the spending bill:

1. Thad Cochran, R-Miss.: $474 million
2. Roger Wicker, R-Miss.: $391 million
3. Mary Landrieu, D-La.: $332 million
4. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa: $292 million
5. David Vitter, R-La.: $249 million
6. Christopher Bond, R-Mo.: $248 million
7. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.: $235 million
8. Daniel Inouye, D-Hawaii: $225 million
9. Richard Shelby, R-Ala.: $219 million
10. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa: $199 million

Actually, on the plane yesterday I sat next to a Big Boy's Union guy from Owensboro, KY. He told me they were in Washington trying to get some of the porkulus that was awarded to Mitch/Kentucky. He didn't much like Mitch or the bill, but since it was a done-deal he wanted his mouth on the Pig's teat (my words, not his:) ) They want to build a new Interstate (I-69) which will run from Pt. Huron, MI to Brownsville, TX and open up those areas for development. This road also allow Mexican Trucks to more quickly bring auto parts back and forth to Detroit, which I know you are in favor of.:) Anyway, there is a big fight between his area and Louisville, which wants to use the Porkulus to build two new bridges across the Ohio River to eliminate traffic jams. Figure for yourself if these types of projects are worth going a Trillion Dollars in debt for (regardless of party). I think it sucks (no pig puns intended.)

Most "sane" people in Texas are against the trans corridor throughway (I-69). Many of us do not want more Mexican trucks on our highways. 9 out 10 stopped by DPS (state troopers) fail basic roadside inspections. Their insurance is flakey at best. There have been stories of the trucks transporting much more than the claimed cargo (humans, guns, drugs).

The new highway is also seen as an expressway to hasten the repatriotization of Texas by Mexican nationals... aw heck, that's already been done.

G, you continually cite Republican follies on this forum under the mistaken belief that this is a Republican forum. My observations indicate that this is largely a conservative forum whose members largely happen to be Republican but are actually strict conservatives which is not the same thing unfortunately. I'm tired of all the partisan attacks and am going to start a thread where we can all state how we feel rather than the "TruthTeller" facts about what is going on according to some obscure cited source. I myself am very conservative but am registered as a Democrat, however; I find myself siding with most of the hard line Republicans, wanting to punch the RINOS, and wanting to torture and drown the Democrats. I want to hug the libertarians and give them money.

Your alleged attack defending your messianic allegiance to the Democratic Party means nothing to me because I'm from Oklahoma and voted for Tom Coburn. Find some "pork" from Senator Coburn. My vote is doing all it can to unscrew this country so don't blame me. Anyone else from OK other than JohhnyDangerously chime in. G, if you'd wanted some fire then you could have pointed out those Republican traitors to some of their constituents and you'd have achieved your aim. I personally consider my own governor an a$$ for not protesting any of this and will not vote for him in the future.

What's right is right and what's wrong is wrong. The only people in between are cowards, panderers, and traitors.

I wrote the title and the sentence stating where I found the article. I didn't call any names or party's, the spread sheet includes the pork from both party's, so exactly how did I call out the republicans ? If you read my thoughts on this bill posted on the forum you would find I'm not happy with a lot of the BS spending.

Funny how some of the pork is going not just to fix existing infrastructure, but to build new projects on Special Interest Group's wish list. I understand why the I-69 people want the new road going through their regions. They have statistics indicating how 4-lane superhighways correlate to regional economic development. We did the same thing, lobbying to get Lincoln Highway Corridor/ US 30 built-out as 4 lane across the State. However, it was done over time in an orderly fashion, using available funding and extensive studies. Now, all are rushing to the Pig wanting to rush through their dream wishlists. And there are good reasons many of these new road projects were never funded. Undoubtedly we will see even more ill-conceived projects built than in the past.

Our tax dollars at work...

NIH Funds $2.6 Million Study to Get Prostitutes in China to Drink Less
The National Institutes of Health is funding a 5-year study in China's Guangxi province to make sure prostitutes in a tourist town there are drinking responsibly.

The project comes thanks to a grant from the NIH's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, which is also funding a $400,000 study of bars in Buenos Aires to find out why gay men engage in risky sexual behavior while drunk -- and just what can be done about it.

The study -- tailored specifically for use in China -- was approved in November, and the government has already spent $469,903 to fund it.
