Study: Red staters buy more online porn than blue staters

Red state or blue, Americans everywhere enjoy online pornography. But those of you living in states that tend to be more conservative and religious are paying to watch slightly more porn than your more liberal counterparts elsewhere, a new study has found.

"When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," Benjamin Edelman of Harvard Business School tells NewScientist. And yet, he found some trends in his data, which came from two years of credit-card purchases from adult Web sites.

The mountain West provided Nos. 1 and 50. At the top of the paid-porn pyramid: Utah. The bottom: Montana.

In the November election, Sen. John McCain carried the porn vote, as NewScientist explains:

Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election — Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.

Church-goers bought less online porn on Sundays — a 1% increase in a postal code's religious attendance was associated with a 0.1% drop in subscriptions that day. However, expenditures on other days of the week brought them in line with the rest of the country, Edelman finds.

Residents of 27 states that passed laws banning gay marriages boasted 11% more porn subscribers than states that don't explicitly restrict gay marriage.

I have no idea how you are relating this study to parenting. Now you could argue that red states are predominantly more sexually repressive than blue states and that the red populace is forced to buy porn to get a fix for something that they are not as likely to express in the open as those in a blue state. I could easily argue the opposite and say that the red state's parents are more responsible because they watch porn behind closed bedroom doors while blue states allow more sexually oriented material into the public domain, but that too would be a stretch.

No it is not hypocrisy unless you are running with part of your initial statement that drew a comparison between gay rights and porn; then it would be hypocrisy but I seriously doubt that the increased level of pornography in the red states comes from the credit cards of homosexual residents. From where I'm sitting I don't see gay people hanging from the fence posts in this particular red state. I do see that the majority of the citizenry supports the government's stance against gay marriage and they have ground to stand on with their stance as do their opposition.

If you are insinuating that the bible belt shouldn't watch porn because it goes against their beliefs then you are forgetting that the hard core bible thumpers do not make of the majority of the population. Religion in general should be a guide not a hard line, "you'll burn in hell if you think about this," mandate and I think that most, not all, but most moderately religious people feel this way.

I'm not sure how they collected data but I'm willing to bet they pulled the numbers out of their ass. Just a wild guess.

G I seriously doubt since a very very large number of the major porn sites come out of Russia that these people truly have any kind of data that is worth the time it took to collect it.
