Reid joins Pelosi in opposing ban revival
By J. Taylor Rushing

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will join House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in opposing any effort to revive the 1994 assault-weapons ban, putting them on the opposite side of the Obama administration.

Reid spokesman Jim Manley said the Nevada Democrat will preserve his traditional pro-gun rights voting record.

"Sen. Reid would oppose an effort [to] reinstate the ban if the Senate were to vote on it in the future," Manley told The Hill in an e-mail late Thursday night.

It was not immediately clear whether Reid would block the bill from the Senate, but his opposition casts serious doubt on its chances. Also, Manley noted that Reid voted against the ban in 1994 and again when it expired in 2004.

Reid's stance joins him with Pelosi, who told reporters Thursday that the administration had not checked with her before Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters the administration would attempt to reinstate the ban. Pelosi gave a flat “no” when asked if she had spoken to Holder or any other administration officials about the issue.

“On that score, I think we need to enforce the laws we have right now,” Pelosi said at her weekly news conference. “I think it's clear the Bush administration didn’t do that.”

Outside of the dig at the recent Republican president, that phrase is the stock line of those who don’t want to pass new gun control laws, such as the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Holder said during a press conference Wednesday in Phoenix that Obama had made reinstating the ban one of his campaign promises.

"There are obviously a number of things that are — that have been taking up a substantial amount of his time, and so I’m not sure exactly what the sequencing will be," Holder said. "It is something, however, that we still think would be an appropriate thing to do."

The news caught Capitol Hill by surprise, immediately pitting Democrats and Republicans against each other and even exposing deep divides among Democrats. A number of House Democrats lost their seats after being targeted by the NRA for voting for the 1994 ban.

Not sure what your point is. As the article notes it is still part of BO's patform and Holder would like to see it. Also, as previously noted, the Dems were trying to tie "90%" of Mexican drug guns to the US -- probably as a reason to tighten US gun laws. It took "Fair and Balanced" Fox to debunk that spurious lie which was being spread by Hillary Clinton and also the mainstream media which accepted the claim with no further investigation.

Point is a lot of folks keep saying that the dems are after their guns and I don't think thats the case.

I agree they have backed off at present mostly due to political expedience However, we won't let our guard down over the course of BO's one term presidency. Also, liberal kook newsblogs (Kos, etc.) are trying to tie recent gun violence to firearms laws and as I mentioned above the Dems and their media mouthpieces never hesitate to distort the facts regarding guns. Besides, guns discussions always tweak Liberals and are a great rallying point for conservatives and other freedom-lovers. We should never let a good controversy go to waste (to paraphrase a certain Dem Chief of Staff).:D

Apparantly your a very young guy "G". The Dems have a record of gun bans. Just look at DC, Commiefornia, NY. all liberals. I posted that artical on 2 gun sites and it was disccused in depth. The dems lost the house and senate after the BC assualt weapons ban, i think they just want to wait till the timing is right.

It was posted on the revolverforum and was discussed. I guess since so many here are also there it doesn't always make it over here when it deals directly with guns. I'm glad they're backing off at present but traditionally the left has been very anti-second amendment.

Holy SHIT I'm about to agree with G.

The NRA supports our second amendment rights. It is clear that there are a some democrats who also support the second amendment. It is also clear they are in the minority in the democratic party.

She Mentioned Registration, But She Also Said It Was For Dc Seem's To Me A Shot At Them Pretty Hard. I Would Be Pissed About It But I Don't See How The Second Amendment Says They Can't Make You Register Them.

Any Body Else Have A Opinion On That?

My opinion is that there is NO ONE in Congress, the Senate, or the White House who is smarter than the men who drafted the Constitution of the United States. So there.
