We've seen swine flu before, but we're seeing it again now, apparently a new strain, and some people are worried:

Mexico swine flu deaths spur global epidemic fears

Center for Disease Control: Swine Influenza (Flu)
http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

The "great plague" of post WWI was actually swine flu which American soldiers brought home from Europe. It killed half a million in America and 20 million around the world.

Not surprisingly, later revisionists (in the late 1990s) said it was actually southern Americans who brought the swine flu to Europe, spreading it to the rest of the world. The current outbreak will probably bring similar revisions. This time it has been reported to have begun in Mexico, but expect that to be challenged.

Regardless of where swine flu comes from, I do not believe this latest iteration to become the next great plague. I'm always positive about my own health, which I consider a blessing from God. But let's keep an eye on this nonetheless - and hope it gets tackled soon.

My niece's' school system n Cibolo,Texas (near San Antonio) has two reported outbreaks. Schools are closed until further notice and public health people are all over the place as you would expect.

School in Richardson (DFW) just closed for the week and a FW school is recommending that all the children see a doctor immediately.

There was a deal on the radio this morning where returning vacationers from Mexico say the Mexican TV is reporting the Swine flu originated in NY and TX and it's the US's fault. Gotta love it.

One of my colleagues planned a vacation weeks ago to a resort in Mexico, as far as I know she & her husband have continued with the plan...she did not come into work today.

Heres to hoping she comes home refreshed/relaxed & healthy

Oh boy. Swine Flu. A rapid flu test will likely be positive for Influenza A (Swine flu is a sub type of that group.)

If you have FEVER (Temp greater than 100 F), Sore throat, Clear Nasal Discharge, Cough, Body Aches, Headache, you should be tested as quickly as possible.

Anti Influenza Medications, Tamiflu and Relenza, have proven effective at treating this strain. But they need to be started as soon as possible after the onset of symptoms. Best benefit is within 24hours. You still get some relief if started within 48 hours. It's useless if you wait more than 48 hours for diagnosis.

Deaths are possible, usually in the Chronically Ill or those on immunosupressive drugs, (Chemo Therapy, or Steroids).

Most cases have been rather mild. The stats I have read have been anywhere from 60 deaths to 81 deaths. About 1300 infected. Death rate of about 6% or less. I don't have any data on co-moribidities on the folks who died, so I can't comment.

CDC has blown up my email in the last 24 hours. For the love of all that is holy. Hand out Purell hand clenser and tissues. It's cheaper than sending your Public Health officials out to "gather data."

As if Karl Rove hadn't done enough to f*** up the country over the past eight years - he managed to include this little gem in one of his rants against the Economic Stimulus bill (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123379742941850311.html):

and $900 million for pandemic flu preparations

Oops.. thanks to his, and other GOP protests, it got taken out of the final bill.

Thanks, Turdblossom.

Why is it that Republicans have this unerring ability to be so absolutely WRONG about just about everything?

Crap, my hermit ways may not save me. I just realized my Dad does a lot of business in Mexico and he's coming for a visit in two weeks. Also, he might bring the plague from Big D.

MYCAR, I read the posts that you and G were arguing about and then came upon TT's post in this thread...it did make me laugh just because of the irony.
