The latest scandal to hit Britain is the publishing of Parliamentary expenses.

In Britain, Members of Parliament use an allowance system that permits them to be reimbursed by taxpayers for many expenses. Many members have been abusing this privilege.

A new rule was implemented to make MPs publish itemized lists of their reimbursed expenses, starting in June. But the Daily Telegraph obtained this list early and began publishing it in piecemeal fashion. The result has been public outcry. Now members of parliament are stepping forward to insist they'll repay their expenses. The press, of course, loves this story... because it is scandal, and because it fuels class warfare.

It's turned into a huge debacle, with story after story published each day for over a week now. All members are affected, but it appears liberal democrats are more threatened by the scandal, and possibly stand to lose significant parliamentary seats.

Correction my friend - they SAY they'll pay it back. It will be interesting to see if they actually do, but yes - point well taken as OUR legislators would become indignant and try to justify the costs and claim that they were legitimate (al a Pelosi).

I guess it's at least nice to know that we're not the only country whose elected politicians are fleecing them...

When will the public wake up???

At least their press represented it as the scandal that it is. Depending upon who perpetrated this type of act in the states, the press would either crucify them or come up with an excuse for them. By the way...why am I typing "party" more and more? Starting to seem like an old Russian movie.

This scandal has absolutely exploded over the last 2 weeks. Some MPs are calling it a witchhunt. Others are saying if there is anything the public in a budget-strapped nation has the right to get angry about, it's the wasteful spending of their own money.

Reuters reports: "European and local elections to be held on June 4 are expected to reflect the level of popular disgust, with lower voter turnout and a move towards fringe parties predicted." When Reuters says fringe parties, they mean conservatives. One glance through that sentence and the article below makes it clear: left-leaning Reuters does not like this development. And what Reuters doesn't like could be a positive development for conservatives. Fiscally motivated voters could empower more conservatives like Daniel Hannan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Hannan). Hannan himself is predicting (http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/daniel_hannan/blog/2009/05/21/european_election_im_still_predicting_a_big_conser vative_win) a conservative win.

The US is keeping a close eye on this. Many Americans don't like to admit it, but trends in the UK often still do predict trends in the USA. And fiscal conservatism would be a trend we could all appreciate right about now.
