Go 10 or 20 years into the future, and what do you see happening with the Mexican Border and illegal immigration?
I reckon it's going to become a huge mess, a millatarised border, skirmishes with guerilla tactics, drug and people running (more than already exists, and on a whole new level of organisation, that is), kidnapping, terrorists - the whole 9 yards.
At least based on the amount of political will that is currently being applied to the problem. All the signs and signals are there.

Not sure about fighting and guerilla operations. There just hasn't been that kind of relationship with our neighbors either north or south.
Alot will depend on where the current legislative process leads.
Separate legislative bills are currently being hashed about in both houses of government and both differ greatly from each other so we're still a long way off from a concrete policy.
As a sovereign nation we need to be in better control of our borders.
Because we have historically had such good rapport with our neighbors we have been exceedingly lax in our border control.
In light of current world affairs this has proved to a very naive approach.
Employers have been eager to overlook the situation in order to obtain lower cost labor for agricultural, lower skilled factory positions and construction industries.
Individual consumers also enjoy taking advantage of lower cost domestic services such as houskeeping, grounds keeping, etc.
As for smuggling, any large nation has issues with patrolling it's borders. The greater extent of the border perimeter the greater the problem.

I dont know how it will play out if we dont have something in place to discourage it once here. Bringing back to the border ones who crossed illegally isnt an answer. The companys who employ them and people who support them (cashing checks, getting illegal SS#'s along those lines) are the ones who need to be punished. Not just remove them but heavy fines should be in place to those who help. If it is discouraged on the end that really brings them in then it may slow to a manageable perameter. Building a fence is a not effective, to the point that Cubans will cross 90 plus miles of shark infested water to get here. If they want in little will stop them.
There will be backlash, at best nothing happens, at worse well a poor relationship with a bordering country and we have other issues. I dont want to compare Berlin to US/Mexico but a wall dose nothing but create hot spots.

If you go 10-20 years into the future with the current rate of influx and take into account the attrition of the normal birth rate of the illegal immigrants, the shift in majority vs. minority will be reversed and since the current line of thinking seems to be majority wins as opposed to rule of law I see a very troubled time in our future.

I fear we will be annexed by Mexico within 10 years. What's to stop them?
It is very interesting that along the Southern border of Mexico they "shoot to kill" policy, but insist that we accept their immigrants. I do not advocate we shoot to kill. But I do believe that the armed forces should be used to protect and defend the borders of the US.
